What You Can See in Greenland

From colossal icebergs and deeply carved coastlines to vast Arctic wilderness and iconic wildlife, Greenland is a place where nature encounters feel profoundly authentic.

Discover the world’s largest island under the midnight sun in June and July, or visit from late August to September for a chance to see the northern lights. Our Greenland expeditions are scheduled during the summer months, when seasonal ice conditions allow greater access to fjords and remote coastlines, temperatures are at their warmest, and wildlife is at its most active.

Explore the wild coastlines aboard a small expedition ship and the untouched landscapes of Northeast Greenland National Park, where you can spot musk oxen, Arctic hares, foxes, and even polar bears. Visit colorful and charming Inuit villages, set against dramatic natural backdrops of mountains and icebergs, and explore contemporary cities, such as Nuuk, with their local cafes, restaurants, and museums.

About Greenland

Greenland is a paradise for wildlife lovers. Spot iconic animals in their natural habitat, from reindeer, musk oxen, and walruses to Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, humpback and bowhead whales, and majestic polar bears — always viewed from a safe distance. During the polar day, long daylight hours gives you extra time to explore and watch wildlife.

Get the best photo ops from the deck of your expedition ship, during Zodiac cruises, hikes ashore, and kayaking. Our professional photographers help you capture the perfect shot to bring home.

Birders can spot great northern divers, barnacle and pink-footed geese, common and king eiders, gyrfalcons, snowy owls, sanderlings, ptarmigan, and ravens. Ask our expedition team and onboard specialists about their unique Arctic life.

Geography & Climate

Greenland is the world’s largest island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, with most of its territory lying within the Arctic Circle. Around 80% of Greenland is covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, while its dramatic coastline is shaped by deep fjords, mountains, glaciers, and iceberg-filled bays.

The climate is Arctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. During the summer expedition season, temperatures are milder, waterways become more accessible, and the midnight sun provides extended daylight for exploration.

Geography & Climate

History & Culture

Greenland's cultural heritage is rooted in Inuit traditions dating back thousands of years, from the earliest cultures around 2500 BC through the Dorset and Thule peoples. In the 10th century, Norse explorer Erik the Red discovered Greenland and settled the south, naming it to attract new settlers. Temperatures were milder then, but by the 14th century the climate cooled and the Norse settlements disappeared.

From 1721, Denmark established colonies in Greenland; the island became part of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953 and an autonomous territory since 2009, with a society shaped by tradition and modernity. Greenlandic is the official language, alongside Danish and English. Rich in resources like zinc, lead, iron ore, and rare earth elements, Greenland's economy centers on fishing and growing tourism, with a culture defined by resilience, survival, and storytelling.

When to Visit Greenland

Summer is the best time for a Greenland expedition cruise. June and July bring the midnight sun, with maximum daylight for exploration and wildlife viewing. By August, softer light creates dramatic photography conditions and better whale-sighting odds. Average summer temperatures run around 0°C (32°F), with highs up to 10°C (50°F) — pack warm clothing, as snow is possible even in summer.

For northern lights, book a late summer or early fall cruise. By early September, sighting odds are high, and our special cruises during this period are among travelers' all-time favorites.

Apply the smart layering system to stay comfortable in quickly changing Arctic conditions. Start with thermal base layers (merino wool or synthetics), add insulating mid-layers like fleece or down, and finish with water- and windproof outerwear. We provide you with rubber boots for the duration of the cruise and a branded Poseidon Expeditions parka, which is yours to keep.

Most travelers from the USA reach Greenland via connecting flights through Reykjavik or Copenhagen. Major U.S. cities offer regular flights to Iceland and Denmark, from where you can continue onward to Greenland destinations like Nuuk or Ilulissat.

For many travelers, an expedition cruise to Greenland is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering access to one of the most remote regions on Earth that is otherwise extremely difficult to reach.

Aboard a small cruise ship and led by a professional expedition team, you’ll journey amid colossal icebergs, explore breathtaking fjords, and encounter iconic Arctic wildlife such as whales, seabirds, and sometimes even polar bears. If you travel in late summer to early fall, you may also have the chance to see the northern lights, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in and of itself.

June offers peak wildlife activity and continuous daylight under the midnight sun. The landscape may still be dotted with ice, but weather conditions gradually become milder into July. Waterways open up and remote landing sites become accessible. Northern lights are not visible during this period, as the constant daylight makes sightings impossible.
